This 3-credit course will examine the peoples and cultures of China, Japan, and Korea, including the major cultural and institutional trends from their origins to the present. The course integrates geography, history, social and political institutions, religion, popular culture and the arts. As one component of the Maryville College general education and core curriculum, the course seeks to foster intercultural understanding, global perspective and appreciation for the breadth, diversity and richness of the human experience.
The primary focus of this course is to gain greater appreciation and understanding of cultures different from one’s own. The learning will be experiential along with intellectual investigation into cultural practices, traditions, and sources. In addition to a basic exploration of cultural characteristics unique to East Asia, the course will examine broad issues such as East/West relations and globalization. We will also look at East Asian distinctives such as cuisine, martial arts, and literature.
Learn about Korean history, arts, culture, daily life, language, architecture, society, values, cuisine, religion, cinema, music and more through a variety of activities including courses, field trips, cultural performances, and volunteer work. 3 credits.
Cost of Hannam University Summer Program, June 21-July 9: $1,800 plus summer tuition (includes airfare and expenses). Cost of both WRC360 and Hannam Summer Program together: $3,900 plus summer tuition for 6 credits. Students pay for only one airline ticket and remain in Korea after the WRC360 program is completed.
Combining the WRC360 travel course and extended cultural program at Hannam introduces students to East Asian arts, architecture, language, cuisine, religions, popular culture, and daily life. It also gives students a chance to learn about and immerse themselves in Korean culture over an extended period. This also meets the 6-week study abroad requirement for International Business and International Studies majors.
