Federal Grant Programs

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is a need based grant awarded to students based upon the information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) www.fafsa.ed.gov. The Federal Government determines the amount to award each student according to a standardized formula and demonstrated need. The maximum annual award was $4731 for the 2008-2009 academic year. The maximum award for 2009-2010 is $5,350.

National Academic Competitiveness Grants

The National Academic Competitive Grant (ACG) was introduced in 2006 to reward freshman and sophomore full time undergraduate students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and have taken a rigorous high school course of study. Eligible students can receive $750 their freshman year and $1,300 their sophomore year. To view additional qualifications and award amounts click here.

National Science and Mathematics Access To Retain Talent (SMART) Grants

The National SMART grant was introduced in 2006 and is available during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. Students must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant to receive the SMART grant. . For more information and a list of majors, click here.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

The SEOG grant is a need based grant awarded to students based upon information submitted on the FAFSA, www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students must have exceptional financial need. Awards are based on Federal funding levels and can range from $100-$4,000 annually. Priority is given to Pell Grant recipients first. The institution determines the amount awarded and the funds are limited.

Federal TEACH Grant (New in 2008)

The TEACH grant is a new Federal Department of Education program worth up to $4,000 per year. Sophomore, Junior and Senior Education Students at Maryville College that have been accepted into the Maryville College Teacher Certification Program and are planning to teach in one of the high-need Teacher Education fields offered at Maryville College can qualify to receive the TEACH Grant (See Below). Eligible Students must commit to teach four of the eight years after graduating in a high-need school. Qualified students must meet certain academic achievement requirements to qualify for the TEACH Grant. Generally have above a 3.25 Cumulative GPA. The student is also required to complete an Agreement to Serve contract with the Federal Department of Education. The $4,000 TEACH Grant is initially a grant but can convert to an UnSubsidized Federal Stafford Loan if the teaching commitment is not met.

Teacher Education fields offered at Maryville College that qualify for the TEACH Grant Program:

  • Math for Teacher Licensure
  • Biology for Teacher Licensure
  • Chemistry for Teacher Licensure
  • Teaching English as a Second Language for Teacher Licensure
  • Spanish for Teacher Licensure

The Maryville College Education Department in conjunction with the Financial Aid Office
will determine a student’s eligibility for the TEACH Grant.
