The majority of Maryville College students receives scholarship and/or need-based assistance. Maryville College scholarships are renewable provided the student maintains an appropriate minimum grade point average (GPA) and/or participation in a particular program or performance group. GPA renewal requirements are in students’ award letters, other program requirements can be clarified by the coordinator of the program in which the student participates.

Eligibility for any need-based aid (i.e. Pell Grants, Tennessee Student Assistance Awards [TSAA], Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants [SEOG] and/or MC Grant) or student loans is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students must complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, 2014. The priority deadline for TSAA is March 1, 2014. MC students who may be eligible for a state award and who file after March 1, 2014, may miss out on valuable grant assistance from the state.

Tennessee residents who have received any scholarship assistance through the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship program (e.g. HOPE/TELS Scholarship) need to be aware of the renewal criteria. At the time students reach 24 credit hours attempted, they must have a minimum cumulative TELS GPA of 2.75. After the initial 24 attempted hours, students must maintain a minimum cumulative TELS GPA of 3.0 at the following benchmarks: 48 attempted hours; 72 attempted hours; 96 attempted hours; 120 attempted hours. All course grades are counted in the cumulative TELS GPA. Attempted hours include courses in which a student enrolls but withdraws after the official drop/add date, remedial coursework, and any courses taken at another higher education institution that were completed after the student’s graduation from high school. The TELS program provides a Repeat Provision that offers a student the ability to repeat one course to increase the TELS GPA. There is also a Regain Provision where a student can regain the HOPE at the subsequent benchmarks. Each of these provisions can only be used once. Please consult the Financial Aid or Registrar’s Office for detailed information. To renew your HOPE/TELS scholarship each year, you must submit the FAFSA by May 1, 2014.
