Gombert showcases ‘Friends and Family' in MC art gallery

Aug. 20, 2003

Dr. Carl Gombert, associate professor of art at Maryville College, will present an exhibition of new paintings and drawings entitled “Friends and Family” Aug. 25-Sept. 26 in the art gallery of the College’s Fine Arts Center.

The show consists of larger-than-life portraits of the artist, his wife, mother and daughters, and assorted friends. Media include oils, conté crayon and photorealistic images created with rubber stamps. Gombert describes his apparently realistic images, even those drawn from life, as “plausible fictions.”

The artist will present a gallery talk at 7 p.m., Sept. 8, in the Fine Arts Center. During the talk, Gombert will show slides of some earlier work, speak briefly about the new work and answer questions. A reception in the Fine Arts Center Lounge will follow.

The gallery is open daily, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Both the reception and the gallery exhibit are free and open to the public.
