Maryville College students who reside in the new Lloyd Hall will be conducting a three-day rummage sale Oct. 22, 23 and 24, to benefit Haven House, a local domestic violence shelter for battered women and their children.
The sale is open to the public and will take place on the lawn in front of Lloyd Hall, beginning at 8 a.m. each day. The students will close the sale at 5 p.m. daily. No early sales.
The dates – Oct. 22, 23 and 24– coincide with Homecoming and Reunion Weekend at the College, which typically draws large crowds.
“Haven House is a safe haven for battered women and sometimes their children to seek refuge from offending abusers,” said Jessie Burkhart, resident assistant at Lloyd Hall. “All proceeds from the sale will go to Haven House. Also, we are accepting donations of all sorts of items except clothing through 5 p.m., Oct. 20.”
Haven House has been in operation in Blount County for 20 years. Last fiscal year, the facility served 117 women and 123 children and a total of 800 women and children through the court advocacy program. Haven House administers a weekly support group and initiated a new program, Power Girls Club, for fourth- and fifth-grade girls to build self-esteem.
“ The residents at Lloyd Hall chose Haven House to be the recipient of the rummage sale profits because of their long-term, successful track record with helping women and children in Blount County,” Burkhart said. “We really want to make the rummage sale successful.”
