Registration is open for Maryville College’s annual Summer Youth Get-A-Way, a popular five-day retreat for high school students, scheduled for June 17-22.
The program is open to rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders and focuses on issues of faith, leadership and vocation.
Registration is due by May 15 and can be completed online at http://www.maryvillecollege.edu/events/syga/.
“The Summer Youth Get-A-Way fuses leadership and values – discovering a potential for leadership while exploring the values of Christian faith in a complex world,” said Diana Curtis, coordinator for service learning and ministry at Maryville College. “These high school students will spend the week contemplating how their gifts might answer the needs of the world.
“Students will both ‘get away’ from their current busy lives and also ‘get a way’ to live out their personal calling,” she added.
To sharpen their leadership skills and to foster a sense of community, participants will come together for team-building activities such as a low ropes course and a climb up the Mountain Challenge Alpine Tower, a 55-foot vertical obstacle course. Small-group discussion topics include issues of faith, leadership and vocation that will help to broaden perspectives and promote learning.
The Rev. Dr. Anne McKee, Maryville College’s campus minister, and a guest musician will help plan and lead daily worship services. A hike in the Smoky Mountains and a group service project will help participants turn their faith outward and begin to live out their calling to serve the world, Curtis said.
Churches may send up to four participants. A limited number of spaces are available and reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Room and board fees for four nights are $225.
