New travel-study options announced for Spring Break 2014

Next year, Maryville College students looking for a memorable Spring Break will have two new exciting options. And they both involve islands.

The College’s Center for International Education has announced the establishment of “embedded” faculty-led travel-study programs, with two scheduled for Spring Break 2014: Bonaire, located in the Dutch Caribbean; and Japan.

“Maryville College has developed two new study abroad programs for spring 2014 that are designed to be embedded into already existing coursework,” explained Kirsten Sheppard, director of international education. “Both the Spring Break program to Bonaire and the Spring Break program to Japan provide Maryville College students with short-term immersion experiences into a foreign culture where they are able to apply course-specific knowledge.

“The Bonaire program is the perfect opportunity for biology students to get credit in their major and get field-research experience in one of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world,” she added. “The Japan program not only gives students studying Japanese the opportunity to use the language in a real-life setting, but it also gives psychology students the chance to explore a cross-cultural topic of their choice in depth.”

Sheppard said she expects this new model of study abroad programming to be popular.

“The shorter duration during Spring Break makes these programs accessible to students who might not be able to travel for an entire January-term, semester or summer,” she explained.

Ecology is focus of Bonaire trip

Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, is the destination for students enrolled in Biology 349: Tropical Ecology. The premier diving site in the Western Hemisphere because of its coral reef, Bonaire is also known for its diverse landscape, which ranges from desert to subtropical.

Activities for the eight-day trip include shore and boat diving, birding, hiking and touring historical, cultural and natural areas, including the Washington Slagbaii National Park.

The course is primarily ecology/conservation/natural resources-based but will also have a specific historic and cultural component designed to expose students to an entirely different culture. Any MC student will be able to go on this trip but must be enrolled in the semester-long BIO 349 course.

A meeting for students who want to learn more about the Bonaire trip will be held at noon, Feb. 13, in Sutton Science Center, room 113.

Culture, linkages explored in Japan

Developing a better understanding of and appreciation for Japanese culture and discovering the linkages between the United States and Japan are goals for students traveling to Japan as a part of Psychology 224: Cross-Cultural Psychology and Japanese 349: Selected Topics in Japanese.

Students will travel the country via rail, with stops scheduled in Tokyo, Mitaka, Nagasaki, Yokohama and Kyoto.

Exploring museums, castles and temples, the group is expected to learn about historical and contemporary connections regarding topics such as the atomic bomb (and nuclear energy), popular culture (anime, music, technology) and the role of religion. Japanese language students will have the opportunity to use their language skills while in Japan.

While the trip is organized for Japanese language and psychology students, any student with an interest in Japan is encouraged to apply.

Application deadline nears

Interested students should fill out the faculty-led program application form and turn it into the Center for International Education (International House) by March 1, along with a $100 application fee. Carter/TRAAVEL scholarship application forms also are due to the Center for International Education by March 1.

Students will be notified by April 1 of their acceptance.
