The Maryville College Theatre Department will perform Lisa Soland’s “Waiting” May 2-5.
A comedy, “Waiting” delves into the lives of 12 characters that share with each other personal stories about their relationships and whether or not they waited to have sex until they were married.
Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. May 2-4 and 2 p.m. on May 5 in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Haslam Family Flex Theatre.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors, MC Theatre alumni and area students. Admission is free for MC students, faculty and staff, although a printed ticket is required for admission. You may purchase tickets online or by calling the Clayton Center Box Office at 865.981.8590.
Lisa Soland, playwright and adjunct professor of theatre at MC will direct the show.
Soland said that she hopes her play will provide insight into the personal struggles people experience concerning premarital sex.
“If the context of the play helps them to understand that love and sex is not how it is shoved down our throats by advertising and popular entertainment, and that they are reminded that relationships are something much deeper than temporary excitement, maybe it will all be worth it,” Soland said.
According to Soland, it is a rare experience for actors to be directed by the person who wrote the play they are performing.
“This unique experience is something that will always live in the memories of these actors and might encourage them to write themselves,” Soland said.
The cast includes junior Caitlin Campbell ‘14 of Maryville as Betsy; freshman Chase Condrone ‘16 of Maryville as Sam; freshman Chelbe Hickle ’16 of Lenoir City as Clair; junior Matt Lyscas ‘14 of Maryville as Bob; sophomore Sara Deatherage ‘15 of Knoxville as Linda; sophomore Cameron Hite ‘15 of Kingsport as Steve; junior Kegan Rinard ‘14 of Jefferson City as Jim; and freshman Blaine Coyle ‘16 of Knoxville as Cindy.
Community members acting in the production include Windie Wilson of Knoxville as Ann; Mitch Moore of Maryville as Norm; and Greg Helton of Morristown as Truman. MC alumna Caitlin Corbitt ’11 of Nashville will play Lindsay.
Junior Rachel Jarnagin ‘14 of Knoxville is the stage manager, and sophomore Daniel Noles ‘15 of Knoxville is the assistant stage manager. Technical director of the theatre department, Jennifer Luck, will act as the technical director for the production.
“I hope the audience can sit back, relax and enjoy themselves,” Soland said. “‘Waiting’ is a great date flick – a comedy that’s full of fun and laughter.”
Samuel French, Inc., will publish a special 10th anniversary edition of Soland’s “Waiting,” which will include the names of the Maryville College Theatre Department production’s cast and crew. The special edition will feature four photos of the MC production’s cast during recent rehearsals, as well as two photos of the original cast when the play was first performed in Hollywood.
Additionally, the cover will feature the College’s poster design for the play by freshman design major Ariana Hansen ’16. According to Soland, the new layout for “Waiting” will remain the play’s cover design after the special edition is complete.
Scripts will be available for purchase during the College’s production May 2-5. Each script is $15 if purchased at the MC production or $17.50 if shipped. For each script sold, $5 will go toward the 2014 Alpha Psi Omega (APO) trip to the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Mobile, Ala.
“Our goal is to sell a total of 200 scripts, which would raise for APO $1,000 for their trip,” Soland said.
