Presence, a series by Knoxville artist Kelly Hider, will be on display in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Blackberry Farm Gallery from Sept. 3 through Sept. 27.

A reception will be held in the gallery on Fri., Sept. 27 from 6 until 9 p.m.

Presence is a series still in progress where children are photographed examining toys that I have adorned with rhinestones,” Hider said. “After printing and mounting, the images are then embellished with black rhinestone specters taking various forms, as well as hand-painted gold filigree that serves as a kind of protection.”

Hider said the work is about “the possible presence of supernatural entities, both alien and deceased, and conversely the possibility of spiritual, fateful forces, discussed in various theological faiths.”

“These children hold in their hands the innocence and wonder of childhood, kept company by gentle spirits of questionable intention,” she said.

Hider, who teaches art at Walters State Community College, earned her BFA in 2007 from the State University of New York-Brockport and her MFA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2011.

She has had solo exhibitions at the University of Rochester and at SUNY-Brockport in New York; Ewing Gallery and Gallery 1010 in Knoxville; and several group exhibitions at Castell Gallery in Asheville, N.C., Cazenovia College in Syracuse, NY, and at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark.
