Upcoming

Minister, actor and comedian Al Staggs will be the 2011 February Meetings speaker. Staggs, who performs dramatic monologues as well as stand-up comedy, will give three performances, including portrayals of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Clarence Jordan. Read the news release on the MC web site.

Community Conversations Series begins Feb. 15 with Carl Wilkens, humanitarian aid worker and founder of the nonprofit World Outside My Shoes. The theme for this semester’s series is: "Health and Human Rights." Watch the MC website for updates.

Nearly 150 pieces of artwork created by middle and high school students from all over East Tennessee will go on display in the Clayton Center’s galleries early next month. The Scholastic Art Competition exhibit continues through March. Watch the MC web site for details.


News for Parents & Families

If your student plans to study abroad this summer, deadlines for applications are approaching! Encourage him or her to visit the Center for International Education.

The Financial Aid Office is encouraging all parents to fill out their FAFSAs this month to make sure that their students receive all of the awards and funds for which they are eligible. (Funds for the Tennessee Student Assistance Award have run out as early as Feb. 1!) For more information, visit the website or call the office at 865.981.8100.

Bay, associate professor of statistics, became the new chair of the College’s math and computer science division on Jan. 1. Read the release online.

Dr. Lawrence P. Jackson, professor at Emory University and author of the 2010 book, The Indignant Generation: A Narrative History of African American Writers and Critics, will speak to the MC community Jan. 17. Eryk WATSON IS NATIONALLY
RANKED IN SCORING

Senior guard Eryk Watson is currently ranked seventh nationally in scoring. His 34-point performance in a recent tournament win helped him secure conference "Player of the Week" honors. Visit the athletics site for details.

MuralART STUDENTS CREATE MURAL FOR LOCAL SCHOOL

Working with MC alumna Lynette King Webb ’93, several painting students conceptualized and created art for the cafeteria of Union Grove Middle School. The MC website has the story.

J-TERM CLASSES IN SESSION
