Debate team

For much of the 20th century, debate teams from Maryville College (like the 1957-58 group pictured above) enjoyed an outstanding reputation among forensic circles. In 1955, Sara Pledger Fechter '55 and Jo Ann Brooks Dunn '56 joined to defeat a team from Harvard.

A new fence is going up around the College Cemetery. Wrought iron is replacing the chain link, and bricked columns with stone caps are being constructed in each of the four corners and at the entranceway.

DEAN’S LIST ANNOUNCED

MC SENIOR COMPLETES INTERNSHIP AT ORNL

Brandon AabyBrandon Aaby ’08, a senior math and computer science double major, recently finished a seven-month internship with Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Read about his experiences in a story written by H. Fred Strohl ’76 and posted online

LEGENDARY COMEDIAN TO VISIT CAMPUS

Bill DanaRemember “José Jimenéz” from the Steve Allen Show?  Legendary comedian Bill Dana will present “Humor: The Shortest Distance Between Two Points” on Tues., Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. in Lawson Auditorium of Fayerweather Hall. Watch the MC web site for a press release.

CHINA IS TOPIC OF FEB. 12 LECTURE

China

The 2008 Jackson Lecture Series brings history professor and author Jeff Wasserstrom to campus to discuss China. His talk, entitled “China in the American Imagination,” is scheduled for 7 p.m., Feb. 12 in Lawson Auditorium of Fayerweather Hall. Details are on the MC web site.

YOUTH CAN SIGN UP NOW FOR GET-A-WAY

Maryville College’s popular five-day summer youth retreat is scheduled for June 8-12. Open to rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders, the SYGA focuses on faith, leadership and vocation.
