Why Study Pre-Med at MC?

The Maryville College pre-med program provides students with the skill set, knowledge, confidence, and character they will need to be successful in a variety of medical or medically-related fields. Maryville college students obtain outstanding placement in medical programs due to the rigorous coursework, hands-on experiences, sophisticated lab work, opportunities for prestigious internships, and volunteer work or shadowing at local hospitals and doctor’s offices.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to obtain personal letters of recommendation from Maryville College faculty, with whom they will work closely throughout their academic career.  Students that have completed our pre-med program have gained admission into MD and/or MD/PhD programs at reputable schools including: Harvard, Johns Hopkins, University of Tennessee, Ohio State University, University of Pittsburgh, and Duke University.

While there are many majors that can be excellent preparation for medical school, students that successfully matriculate into medical schools typically graduate from Maryville College with a B.S. in Biology, a B.A. or B.S. in Biochemistry, a B.A. in Chemistry, or a B.S. in Neuroscience. All of these majors give breadth and depth of study, providing students with all prerequisites to assure medical school success.

Maryville College Works is a comprehensive career preparation program that is integrated into the College’s four-year liberal arts curriculum. Key components include assessment, advising, networking and professional experiences.

Dr. Matt Mart ’09
Currently: Resident Physician in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center

After completing his degree at MC, Matt spent a year working with the AmeriCorps VISTA program before enrolling in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He earned his M.D. in 2014. “My daily work in medicine requires a keen appreciation for the role of science in approaching the treatment of disease, as well as a deep understanding of human nature. Maryville College offered the perfect blend of rigorous education in the natural sciences combined with a focus on the liberal arts and humanities so important to developing a well-rounded individual. From Dr. [Drew] Crain’s physiology course to Dr. [Bill] Meyer’s course on philosophy and science to the January Term Course in ethics, I found that my education at Maryville College exquisitely prepared me to step into my role as a physician.”
