Maryville College named a champion of inclusion and is this month's NCAA Division III Diversity Spotlight Winner! Go Scots! #ScotsNation http://www.mcscots.com/sports/mbkb/2014-15/releases/20141001m3jerh
Tonight over 300 student-athletes at Maryville College participated in a workshop in the Cooper Athletic Center facilitating meaningful conversations on diversity on the campus and in the local community. A video was displayed created by MC’s Athletes for Change. Ten groups, led by Scots’ coaches combined with Student Athlete Advisory Committee members, helped stimulate conversations in small group settings in a comfortable environment. Facilitators were looking for their definitions of discrimination and how one does discriminate. Each group was asked their perceptions of discrimination through personal testimonies or any current events. The groups were asked how they deal with and plan to eradicate discrimination as part of the “Step Up” program implemented within MC’s student development department this fall. As part of the “Step Up” program and the video message each group looked at their ability to sustain the message, develop a system and commitment towards keeping their peers in check, and properly responding to individual differences within their campus community.
