L. A. Campbell
Class of 1951
All Notes Memoriam

passed away on Monday, February 17, 2014 at Sterling House of Maryville. An Alcoa “Tornado” through and through, the transition to having a Maryville address when he moved to Sterling House Assisted Living of Maryville was hard, the final transition to heaven was full of peace and glory! L.A. grew up in the Bassel community in Alcoa on Lindsey Street with his parents, Lucious and Delean Campbell; and his brother, Robert, all of whom predeceased him. He met the love of his life, his future wife, Virginia Lee Hand, as a student at Alcoa High School. After graduating in 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army just as World War II was ending, and served his country in France. Returning to civilian life, he attended Maryville College where he played football and baseball and graduated in 1951 with a degree in physical education. He and Virginia were married on April 15, 1951. He taught physical education and math (including algebra, geometry, and calculus) first at Friendsville and then for Alcoa City Schools, Bassel (where he also served as principal), Springbrook, and Alcoa Junior High and High School. He coached every sport available at the time; basketball, both boys’ and girls’ teams, football, and, for many years, Alcoa High School baseball. Generations of kids, now middle-aged and older, know him as “Coach Campbell”. During the 1960’s he enrolled at UT and earned a Master’s Degree in educational administration and supervision. L.A. was kind, patient, generous, intelligent, creative, and wryly funny. His life revolved around giving to others. He was always willing to provide extra help to his students before and after school. He gave blood regularly his whole adult life, he delivered meals for Meals on Wheels after his retirement from teaching at the age of 68, developing wonderful friendships with the clients, he loved gardening and grew delicious tomatoes, green beans, corn, okra, and cucumbers that he happily gave away to friends, neighbors and acquaintances as well as to the folks on his Meals on Wheels routes. He was active in Alcoa First United Methodist Church for 60 plus years, participating in and leading committees, ushering, and leading Bible studies and teaching the Christian Fellowship Sunday school class. L.A. discovered the pleasure of grandparenting upon the birth of his first granddaughter, Meghan Large Rasnake, and played Barbies with her, and later with his second granddaughter, Keely Pate Everett, without complaint. He then had three grandsons, David Norris Large, Robert “Bo” Lee Campbell, and Shane Christopher Campbell, with whom he shared his love of sports of all kinds, playing baseball, basketball, tee ball, golf, soccer and football with all of them any chance he got. L.A. is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia Hand Campbell; his daughters and sons-in-law, Jenny Campbell Pate (Bill) of Springfield, Virginia, and Amy Campbell Large (Phil) of Maryville; and his son and daughter-in-law, Robert “Bob” Montgomery Campbell (Connie McCall) of Hobe Sound, Florida; his five beloved grandchildren; and one great grandchild, Eliot Campbell Rasnake; his sister-in-law, Mary Nelle Campbell; and a host of friends, especially his best, lifelong friend Gene Reynolds (Charlene). Sincere thanks to the wonderful staff at Sterling House of Maryville and to his friend and physician, Dr. Steve Pershing of Madisonville.

Carol Corbett
Class of 1951
Memoriam

Carol Corbett (born Betty Carol Corbett) died on January 14, 2022, a few weeks past her 92nd birthday. She was born in 1929 in Jacksonville, FL to George Lester Corbett and Marian Henry Corbett. Carol and her older sister, Louise, were raised on modest means in the Great Depression’s wake. There was not a lot of money, but since they didn’t know anything different, they were happy and content. Their mother made a great effort to make sure her girls had opportunities, including elocution and violin lessons, and educations at Maryville College in Tennessee. After college, Carol settled in the Washington DC area where she worked for the Department of Agriculture, met and married Donald Raymond Jackson, and became mother to son, Donald Clark and daughter, Linda Marian.

While raising their young children in Connecticut, Carol returned to Trinity College, earned her MA in English, and became a substitute teacher. Later, after a family move to Louisville, KY in the 1970’s, she worked as a secretary in an investment firm and, through her own initiative and persistence, broke a glass ceiling by passing rigorous exams to establish herself as a stockbroker. She acquired a loyal set of clients, grateful for her smart financial moves on their behalf.

Carol remained a steadfast Maryville College alumna for all of her days. In her retirement (and long after a divorce from D.R. Jackson), she reunited with her college beau, Carl Lindsay, Jr. from New Hope, PA. They spent many happy years there together where she was welcomed and loved by her “east coast family.”  After Carl’s passing, Carol relocated to the Sacramento area to be near her daughter. With her sunny disposition, Carol quickly developed a new circle of treasured friends. She was fiercely independent, a savvy player of bridge, and a social butterfly.

Carol Corbett is survived by her children, Donald Clark Jackson (Darlene Yaplee) and Linda Marian Jackson Collins (Rob Collins), her granddaughter, Jordan Yaplee Jackson, her nephews William H. Owen and David C. Owen, and her east coast family: CL Lindsay III, Anne Thornton, Tony Thornton,  Helen Thornton, Karen Thornton, Chris Farley, Patrick Farley, and Jack Farley. She is also fondly remembered by D.R. Jackson’s family: Nancy Jackson, Brenda Jackson, John Jackson, and Laura Jackson.

Donald P. deNagy
Class of 1951
Memoriam

Donald deNagy passed peacefully in his sleep to spend Christmas and eternity with his beloved wife Doe on Friday, December 25, 2020.

Don deNagy started his life in Pittsfield, Massachusetts as the last child of Louis and Ruth deNagy. He joined his brother Hugh and identical twin Bruce. Through his childhood the family lived in Pittsfield, Delmar, NY and Oak Ridge, TN. He graduated from Maryville College in Tennessee, where he met the love of his life, Dolores (Doe). They married in 1951 and celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2001 with a party filled with friends and family. After his service in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict, he began and retired from The Travelers Insurance Co as a claims manager. Many lifelong friends were made, parties were had, and great memories still exist today. Over the years his family grew to include three daughters, Deborah Boone, Dorrie deNagy and Deidre Bidwell. We were and will always be “the five D’s!

He loved to drive, so family vacations were spent camping all over the country. After he retired, Don and Doe purchased an RV (a real upgrade from pup tents and the Ted Williams pop-up camper). The RV went from Maine to Florida and all parts in between with family members tagging along whenever they were able. They loved to travel to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, but their most memorable trips were to the Czech Republic where Don met many relatives and rang the bells in the church where his Great Grandfather preached, and cruising through the Panama Canal on Does birthday.

The family has grown to include sons-in law, David Boone and Eric Bidwell, his adoring granddaughters, Sarah Harris (Peter), Abigael Boone and Margaret and Laura Bidwell, and Dorries partner, Paul Collen. After growing up with all boys he was now totally surrounded by women, and he loved it.

After Doe passed away in December 2002, he spent several years meeting his youngest granddaughters at the bus stop after school and spending afternoons enjoying each other’s company. After the October 2011 snowstorm, he decided to move into assisted living and spent 7 years at Middlewoods of Farmington. As his health declined, he spent the last 15 months at The Reservoir in West Hartford. Our family is deeply indebted to all the staff for taking such good care of our Dad.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and sister-in law, Barbara Thompson.

He was a man of the greatest generation, humble, polite and soft spoken and you knew you were loved.

Thank you, Dad, – you are the best. We love you and miss you.

Everything is truly “fine” now.

Tom S. Kees
Class of 1951
All Notes Memoriam

Thomas S. Kees Jr. died on February 27th after a long war with cancer. Tom had won all of the previous battles, but cancer ultimately won the war. He was preceded in death by by his prostate, his esophagus and bladder. His wife Nancy, told him that if he wanted to get away from her, divorce would be easier than trying to escape piece by piece. He was born in 1929, to Mae and Thomas Kees in Philadelphia, PA. he met the aforementioned Nancy in that city and made her his child bride. Her mother frequently played that song “Too Young” when he came to court her. But, despite her lack of faith in her daughter’s maturity, the marriage lasted almost 62 years. A graduate of Maryville College in Tennessee, he enlisted in the Army right out of college, leaving us to question the quality of his education. He worked in Counterintelligence and we’re sure he had some interesting adventures. Sadly, he couldn’t tell us about them or he’d have to kill us. Following his army service, he began his long career at Sears, Roebuck and Co. He excelled at every job he had and quickly rose up the corporate ladder. he retired in 1989 and Sears has been in steady decline ever since. He would tell you this was no coincidence. He and Nancy moved to Pinehurst, NC upon his retirement. Thankfully for Nancy’s sanity, he kept himself busy with many activities in his new home. He was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. he served on the Moore County Water and Soil Conservation Board and was still actively serving on the Moore County ABC Board when he died. He also became a lawn Bowler, which was a perfect sport for an old guy. He served as President of the Pinehurst Lawn Bowls Club 4 times (mainly because no one else wanted the job) and as Secretary of the U.S. Lawn Bowls Association. In 2016, he was inducted into the U.S. Lawn Bowls Hall of Fame. His children were thrilled because they can subtly drop the fact that their dad was a Hall of Famer in conversations to impress people. He leaves behind his mostly loving wife Nancy, his children Barbara, Susan and David and six wonderful grandchildren. He will reunite with his parents, his brother Bob, his sister Ginny and his son Tommy when he walks through those pearly gates. There will be a memorial service on March 9th at 1pm at Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst, NC. The service will be held in the Fellowship Hall due to ongoing renovations to the sanctuary, not because they’re trying to keep him out. He was the smartest man we ever knew, warm, kind, generous and funny. Our family will miss him terribly.
