passed away October 7, 2014. She was born in Maryville Tennessee, daughter of the late Roy Blackburn and Alice Blackburn. In 1968 she moved to Lake County from Mountain City, Tennessee. She was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Eustis, Florida and a member of the Presbyterian Women's organization. She was active in Howey -in-the-Hills Garden and Civic Club; Lake Association for Home and Community Education and Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority. Before coming to Lake County, Alice was a 4-H/Home Economics' extension agent in Mountain City TN. She employed as 4-H extension agent with the University of Florida/Lake County Extension from 1968 until her retirement in 1992. She administered the 4-H youth development program serving over 5,000 youth an leaders during her career. Alice graduated from Maryville College with a Bachelor's degree in home economics and earned a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She received several awards: Distinguished Service Award from National Association of Extension 4-H Agents and its 25 Year Service Award, Lake County Agriculture and Youth Fair's 1992 Roll of Honor for 20 years of service, President of the Florida Association of the 4-H Agents and registration chairman for the 1981 National Conference of 4-H service as a volunteer. The Howey Garden and Civic Club gave Alice the 2002 Blanche Hobbs Award for outstanding service. Friends appreciated her dependability and quiet steady manner. Alice enjoyed sewing, weaving, upholstery, bread making and scrapbooking. Alice is survived by her Husband of 42 years,David H. Ayres. Also surviving her brother, Charles R (Elizabeth) Blackburn of Maryville, TN; sister-in-law, Fern Blackburn of Knoxville; nephews, Richard E. (Cynthia) Blackburn, Thompson Station, TN; Timothy C. (Jean) Blackburn of Maryville; great nieces, Gracie, Jordin and Audrey; great -nephews, Joe and wife Rachel; great-great niece, Virginia Alice and Cousin, Grace Stinecipher of Standford, FL. Suzanne (Suzy) Boyd Jones Bowman born April 12, 1936 passed away Saturday, November 21, 2020 in Irmo, South Carolina. There will be a small burial service in Fort Jackson National Cemetery because of the pandemic with a memorial service at a later date. Suzy was born in Umatilla, FL on April 12, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Betty Boyd Jones and Paul Floyd Jones. She graduated from Elizabethton, TN High School, attended Maryville College, Maryville, TN and graduated from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA in Medical Technology. She worked in Staunton, VA and Knoxville, TN before becoming a full time homemaker and mother. She was a lifelong Presbyterian, serving in many capacities in different churches. She had been a member of Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church, Columbia, since 1995. She was married for 61 years to Harold Edward (Hal) Bowman. She moved around from Tennessee, Alabama, Virginia, New Jersey, and Virginia before retiring to Irmo, SC in 1994. She leaves behind husband, Harold E. Bowman; son, James Harold (Carla Gray) Bowman of Melbourne, FL; daughter, Ann Elizabeth Bowman of Raleigh, NC; grandsons, William James Bowman of Vancouver, BC, Matthew Thomas Bowman (Annie) and great-grandchildren, Janie Marie, Jacob Matthew, and Jackson Harold Bowman, all of Bloomfield, IN.; and a sister, Patricia Claire Jones, of Oak Ridge, TN. age 78, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away Sunday, September 30, 2013, at Parkwest Hospital. Mrs. Butturini was a fourth grade teacher at Rocky Hill Elementary School for 23 years. She was a graduate of Maryville College. Preceded in death by sons, Scotty Allen and Kenneth Russell Butturini; parents, Beecher Mayfield, Sr. and Minnie Mayfield. Evelyn Blackburn Campbell, age 83 of Maryville, Tenn., passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2018, at Brookdale at Sandy Springs. A faithful member of Maryville First United Methodist Church and a Maryville College graduate, she was preceded in death by her parents, John J. Pastor Frank Kalman Chapo, 96, of Johnson City died Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at The Waters. He was a native of the village of BabonyMegyer, Hungary, son of the late Joseph and Margit Csermak Chapo. Frank served in the Hungarian Army during WWII, he was a POW and was Tran Scripted into the German Army and he went AWOL and followed Patton’s army to stay safe from the Nazi Army. He came to America soon after the war and became an American Citizen in 1956. Frank attended and graduated from Maryville College then attended Columbia Seminary, attained his master’s degree and became a Presbyterian minister until 1986. Frank was a longtime member of Central Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, his second wife Tennessee “Tennie” Carolyn King Enkema Chapo preceded him in death; also a stepson, Phil Enkema, his first wife was Lela H. Chapo. Survivors include: three step children, Robert and Jim Enkema and Carolyn Harkey; several grandchildren and great grandchildren on the Enkema side. York, PA – Mike passed away under the care of his devoted wife, Mary Lou Whitlock-Connolly on November 12, 2020. He was born in Baltimore on January 10, 1935 and was predeceased by his mother, Margaret (Peggy) VanHorn Berger and step-father, Niles Berger. In addition to his widow, he is survived by his step-children: P. Randall (Randy) Whitlock and his wife, Linda Felch; Elizabeth Belair and her husband, Kevin; Kelly L. Schaeffer. Also surviving are his step-children: Kristina, Sarah and Corey Schaeffer; Catherine Volinski; Melissa Rau (NH) and John Pamplin (San Francisco). Also surviving is his sister, Yvonne B. Knight, her husband, Ray (IN), nephews Steve and Roger Knight (Louisville) and cousin, David Kelly (Baltimore.)

Mike graduated from Boys Latin School (Baltimore) and attended Maryville College and the University of Maryland. He was a faithful member of the Towson Elks Club for thirty years and made weekly visits there to be with many friends. He was very proud of his service in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Margaret Frances Dent, age 84, of Maryville, went home to be with the Lord on November 2, 2020. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Margaret attended Maryville College, where she met William Dent, the love of her life, and husband of 61 years. Margaret had three sons and an extended family whom she loved, cherished, and adored. Her passion was for education and taught kindergarten for over 30 years, 25 years of which were in the Maryville City School System. She had a kind and gentle spirit that loved and nurtured her students. In addition to her love of her family and teaching, she was an accomplished pianist and violinist who loved to listen to and play classical music. Among her favorite hobbies were gardening and watching birds from their back porch. She loved the Lord and spent her life serving and caring for others. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Murl and Margaret Jones. She is survived by her husband, William Dent of Maryville; sisters, Judy Herr of Richmond, Virginia and Mary Lou MacCall of Southern Pines, North Carolina; sons, William Dent III (Jane), Richard (Sheri), and John (Kelly); grandchildren, Nicole Schmitt (Matthew), David Hughes (Kristen), Megan, and Ryan; great granddaughter Eva; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of dear, close friends. Reverend Herman Dykes passed away suddenly on Tuesday June 2, 2015 at the age of 85, in Tavares, Florida. He grew up in Tavares and graduated from Tavares High School in 1947. He went on to graduate from Maryville University and then Princeton University with a Master’s Degree in Theology. He was ordained in 1962 as a Presbyterian Minister, and was also employed by the Department of the Interior, in Washington D.C. He returned to Orlando Florida after his retirement in 1992. He has resided in Tavares with his family for the past 2 years. He is survived by his five nieces, three nephews and their families; along with his beloved whippet dog Haylie. He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman T Dykes Sr. and Zena M Dykes; his brother Bernard Dykes; and his sister Betty A Dykes Hawthorne Visitation will be held at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home, Ivanhoe Chapel Thursday 5:30 pm until 8 pm. Lila L. Engle, age 76, of Fowlerville, retired high school (Washington Courthouse, Ohio) teacher, died Monday, February 20, 2012. Services 1:30 p.m. Friday at Niblack Funeral Home, Dillingham Liverance Chapel, Fowlerville.

Good News, Robert W. Finertie ’57 turned 90 the day his book was published. This book is the story of hope. help and being spared.  Grace In Time: A Memoir, tells the story of being spared from stage two melanoma (1976), from colon cancer which required a sigmoid resection of his bowel and removal of a fist-sized tumor and 14 inches of his sigmoid colon (1992) and, spared from a stroke which threatened his life, in 2022.

This is his second book. Both are available on Amazon.com, as a paperback and an ebook, just in time for Christmas.

Clara Joe Fisher, 87, of Amherst, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died on January 21. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, the Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Fisher, her daughter, Jill Auger (Pierre Auger), her son, Frank Fisher (Margaret Guerra), and four grandchildren: Marc Auger, Corinne Auger, Nathanael Guerra, and Bethlehem Guerra. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Kay Bush.

Clara Joe was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, the daughter of Frank S. and Clarabel Smith Minarik. She grew up in a household that was active in the local community,social issues, and politics.Her father served as Democratic national committeeman from Arizona, and she and Tom attended President Kennedy’s inauguration on his behalf. She was predeceased by her brother, Smith Minarik, and her sister, Mary Ann Minarik Lane. She attended Maryville College in Tennessee, where her parents met, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. During college she served as national moderator of the Presbyterian Westminster Fellowship. After college, she attended Princeton Theological Seminary, where she and Tom met. They were married in August, 1958.

Clara Joe was a teacher, substituting and teaching summer school as she raised her family, and later teaching ESL. She was also a vital partner to Tom in ministry at Abington Presbyterian Church in Abington, Pennsylvania, Camelback Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley (Phoenix), Arizona, Calvary Presbyterian Church in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, Clayton Valley Presbyterian Church in Concord, California, and First Presbyterian Church in Athens, Ohio. They moved to Amherst, Massachusetts, in retirement in 1999. She will be remembered for the wonderful and loving partnership that she and Tom shared for nearly 65 years, her love for her family, her deep commitment to the Presbyterian church and many causes, her loving care for a host of pets over many years, her cooking (she was even featured as a “born cook” in McCall’s Magazine in 1953), her singing, the way she made a house a home, and her love of gardening.

William Hunter Dent, Jr, age 86, of Maryville, went home to be with the Lord on December 7, 2022.  Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, William attended Maryville College, where he met Margaret Dent, the love of his life, and wife of 61 years.  William had three sons and an extended family whom he loved dearly.  After graduation from Maryville College, where William majored in Math and was an accomplished baseball player, William earned a Master of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Kentucky.  William completed his PhD in Mathematics in 1972 at the University of Tennessee.  William began his teaching career at the University of Kentucky and returned to teach Mathematics at Maryville College for 38 years, retiring in 2002.  From 1980 to 2000, William was the chair of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department.  William was active as a youth baseball coach, and in Church activities, having served as the Chairman of the Board of Deacons for a local Church.  William enjoyed teaching, gardening, traveling, playing bridge, and sports, especially the University of Kentucky and the Philadelphia Phillies.  William was preceded om death by his wife, Margaret; parents, William, Sr. and Eva Dent; and sister Dorothy Owens.  William is survived by three sons, William Dent III (Jane), Richard (Sheri), and John (Kelly); grandchildren, Nicole Schmitt (Matthew), David Hughes (Kristen), Megan Dent, and Ryan Dent; great granddaughter Eva Hughes; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of dear, close friends.  A Celebration of Life will be held at the Lamar Hall, Maryville College Chapel with a date and time to be announced.  The service will be a celebration of life for William and Margaret as on could not be held for Margaret due to Covid-19 concerns.

Nancy Halliburton Hall, of Peachtree City, GA, passed away on July 26, 2015 while under the care of Serenity Hospice and Ashley Glenn Memory Care. She was born in Knoxville, TN on February 18, 1935 to the late Voreta Sharpe Halliburton and Alwyn Halliburton. Nancy was educated in the Knoxville City Schools and graduated from East High School in 1953. She performed as a majorette in Junior HS, HS, and at Maryville College. She was a loyal Delta Air Lines employee for 32 years, retiring in 1993. She used her flight privileges for extensive travel for as far away as Russia, Japan, and Australia. She enjoyed supporting various organizations in the Atlanta area including The High Museum, The Atlanta Zoo, and The Alliance Theatre. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Richard. She is survived by her brother, J. A. Halliburton; loving husband, Frank; daughters, Sharon (Brad) Logan, Hallie (Russ) Kimsey; grandchildren, Jenna (Blake) Meharg, Logan Kimsey, Caroline Kimsey; great-grandson, Colton Kimsey; and her step-daughters, Wendy (Bill) Martin, and Paige (Ralph) Mayercik.

of Sacramento, CA died on July 12, 2015 at his home. He was survived by his wife Nancy, daughters Carla Leimbach (Jim – predeceased) and Stacey Jones (Dan). Survivors also include grandchildren Bryan Leimbach, Kyle Leimbach, Jacob Jones, Zachary Jones and Mallory Jones. MJ spend all of his working life in aerospace. The last 18 years of his career he served as Director of Logistics & Support for Litton Indfustries. A memorial service to honor MJ was held August 9, 2015 at Faith Presbyterian Church in Sacramento.

Rachel Louise McCastlain Hill

Age 85, died Sunday, April 24, 2022, at home in Marlinton, West Virginia, surrounded by

loving family. Rachel and her husband, Johnny Hill, were long-time residents of Oxford, Ohio, and members of the Oxford United Methodist Church.

Rachel was born in Fulton, Kentucky, on December 30, 1936. Her father, Morris Sheppard McCastlain of Holly Grove, AR, was a minister who served in the Memphis Conference and later in the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. He also served as an Army chaplain during World War II. Her mother, Bessie Copeland McCastlain, from Windsor, NC, was a teacher for many years.

Rachel’s parents met while attending Duke University. Interestingly, Rachel met the love of her life, Johnny Ferguson Hill, of Murfreesboro, NC, while they were also both students at Duke. They were married December 28, 1957. Previously Rachel had studied at both Maryville College in Tennessee and at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Rachel would tell anyone that her major role in life was being a mother, a role in which she gave her all and at which she excelled. From the beginning Rachel had a vision of what a good parent should be – a loving nurturer. She shared that vision with her husband and together they went about this high calling of being parents. As her children grew, she began to take on duties outside the home, first as a church secretary and later as an administrative assistant at Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio. Over the years, Rachel worked with faculty in several areas, including the Departments of Geology, History, and Aeronautics/Physics, as well as with emeritus university president, Phillip Shriver.

As a practiced musician who continued to develop her piano talents, Rachel shared her skills with her daughter, practiced long hours with her husband – a church soloist, and accompanied her husband and three sons who formed a very active male quartet. Later in life, Rachel often took the role as substitute pianist at Marlinton (WV) United Methodist Church, where the congregation warmly supported her efforts to contribute to worship.

She is survived by her husband Johnny of Marlinton, WV; daughter Rachel Leigh Foy and husband Greg Foy of York, PA; sons, Jeff (Johnny F. Hill II) and wife Gina of Cincinnati, OH; Fenton and wife Michelle of Boulder, CO; Eric and wife Jennifer of Cincinnati, OH; and brother, Morris Sheppard McCastlain, Jr, of Lakeland, FL. She leaves many loving and adoring descendants – ten grandchildren, five grandchildren-in-law, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Elizabeth Josephine Downey.

Elinor Bass Hopkins, 79, died on Monday April 20, in Lynchburg. Born in Alcoa, Tennessee, on December 25, 1935, she was the daughter of Beatrice Irene Dreher and Beverly Calvin Bass. She is survived by her husband of fifty-eight years, James Wayne Hopkins; daughter, Elizabeth Bass Maghsoodi; son, James Calvin Hopkins; daughter, Joanna Hopkins King and husband, Steven Douglas King. Her grandchildren are Korosh and Natalie Maghsoodi; Steven and Julia King. She is also survived by her three sisters: Virginia Bass Eaddy '61 and husband John '62; Martha Bass Bishop and husband Skip; Beverly Bass Hines and husband John. The family includes three nieces and four nephews. A graduate of Maryville College, Tennessee, she spent several years in Georgia and Iowa before moving in 1964 with her husband and young children to Lynchburg, the town she loved immediately, and the place that became her home. Within the fifty years that followed, she was devoted to her family, community, and her church. For fifteen years she served as director of The Adult Care Center, Court Street Methodist Church, and for an equal length of time, she travelled with the Committee for Self-Development, an outreach of the Presbyterian Church. For several years she worked with the non-profit organization, Displaced Homemakers. In 1974, Elinor was ordained as First Presbyterian Church's first female deacon, and in 1982, she became an elder. She was a charter member of the Gifford-Martin Sunday School Class and remained faithful over the years. She was pleased to be present at the church's Two-Hundred-Year anniversary. There was nothing she loved more than spending time with her family in the natural setting of Rockbridge Baths and Goshen Pass. An avid reader and daily letter-writer, she stayed connected to every member of her family.

Dr. Kenneth D. Hutson, 74, of Marietta, died peacefully Sunday, October 4, 2009, surrounded by his family. Born in Monroe County, Tennessee, he is survived by his wife, Katherine; three daughters, Karen Crowe and husband, Andy; Katrina Wood and husband, Charles; Kristie Vanderpoel and husband, David; one son, Kenneth Hutson, Jr. and wife, Katie; six grandchildren, Clint, Kyle, and Anne Crowe; Jonathan Wood; and Abbey and Kenny Vanderpoel; and one brother, William R. Hutson of Maryville, TN. A longtime resident of Marietta, he practiced dentistry for 35 years, was a member of the Cobb County Dental Society, served one year as the Chair of the dental staff at Kennestone Hospital, and was a member of the Academy of General Dentistry. He was a past president of the Metro Marietta Kiwanis Club and served on the Board of Commissioners for the Cobb County Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs for over 20 years. Dr. Hutson played guitar and was the lead singer for the bluegrass band, The Brakemen, and was an honorary inductee into the Georgia Country Music Association Hall of Fame. He served as a Captain in the Air National Guard, and was an inactive Deacon at Roswell Street Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Maryville High School in 1953, the University of Georgia in 1957, and Emory Dental School in 1963.
