Ellington Lloyd Adams It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved Ellington Lloyd Adams (Marietta, Georgia), who passed away at the age of 27, on July 27, 2019. Kelly Hertzel completed the MAcc (Masters of Accountancy) Program at UT Knoxville in May 2015 and is currently working at Ernst Young in the Nashville Office.

Katherine McNeely-White (’17) and David McNeely-White (’14) welcomed a son, Jasper Leigh McNeely-White, on December 5th, 2023.

recently took a job as the Grundy Safe Communities Coalition Coordinator. They are a coalition that targets underage drinking, tobacco use, and non medial prescription drug use in Grundy County.

Mary Moates ’14 is engaged to Jordan Tarwater ’13.

Mary Moates ’14 has been named Associate Director of Publicity at Crown Publishing, a high profile imprint of Penguin Random House that has published bestselling books by the Obamas, Volodymyr Zelensky, and many more esteemed world voices. She is married to Dr. Rev. Jordan Tarwater ’13. They live in New York City.

Marietta College announced the hiring of Kristy Newman ’14 as the Pioneers’ new head volleyball coach. Newman becomes the 12th head coach in program history. died Sept. 9, 2014. He was a first-year graduate student in the entomology program at Clemson University. He was a well respected and honorable student during his time at Maryville College and Clemson. He is survived by his parents, brother, family and friends.

The Mountain Six Conference has named Joe Pinkston ’14 as All-Conference Coach of the year for his work with the Pisgah (NC) High School girls soccer team.

is a full time interpreter in the Knox County, Tenn. school system. She also worked at Visual Communication Interpreting (VCI) in the office handling requests and other tasks in spring and summer 2014.

is currently working at Carpenter’s Middle School now as a teacher’s aide in Special Education.

David White ’14 will be attending Colorado State University in the fall to pursue a Master’s of Science in Computer Science focusing on Machine Learning.

David graduated with his Ph.D. in computer science from Colorado State University in May 2022. He is now an applied scientist at Amazon, doing research on machine learning and computer vision. David and his wife, Kat McNeely-White (’17), recently moved to West Sacramento, CA.

Lillian Winchester completed the MAcc (Masters of Accountancy) Program at UT Knoxville in May 2015 and has accepted a position as a Tax Associate at Novinger, Ball and Zivi, PC in Knoxville, TN.

Kelly graduated from the University of Kentucky in May 2017 with an MA in Linguistic Theory and Typology. During her time there she presented her work at several national conferences and an international conference in Sarajevo. She also taught Linguistics, Rhetoric, and Communication courses as a primary instructor. Most recently, she was asked to lead a three hour workshop at the Linguistics Society of America Summer Institute, a month-long, biannual gathering of the field. This workshop () was on using digital tools for Humanities–things like ELAN, CLAN, RegEX, Python, AntConc, etc. Currently, she has begun a PhD in Experimental Sociolinguistics at the University of Michigan. All of her work focuses on how institutionalized racism shapes the way language is used, and how the way language is used maintains racism in society. She was recently chosen for a high prestige competition in Linguistics–The Five-Minute Linguist. () Similar to Ted Talks, it happens annually at the LSA Annual Meeting. She will be competing against seven other researchers for substantial prize money and an interview with the New York Times about her work. The title of this work is Covert Segregation: Investigating Dialect Discrimination in the Housing Market. More information about this work and her teaching can be found here:
