Memoriam

Terry Margaret Berggren, age 54, of Sweetwater passed Tuesday, October 24, 2017. Terry was raised in the Church of God and put her faith in Our Lord Jesus Christ. Preceded in death by her father, Alden Grey Pitcock. Survived by her mother, Lilan Beatrice Duckett Pitcock, of Sweetwater Sisters and brothers-in-law, Diane Bohannan and husband James, of Athens, Tammy Smith and husband David, of Knoxville, nieces and nephews, Randy Shaw, Barbara Rowland, Andrew Smith, Amy Smith Gilman,and Adela Smith Lunsford along with several great-nieces and great-nephews.

General Notes

CRC Press has released a book titled “Managing Environmental Data:  Principles, Techniques, and Best Practices” written by MC Alum Gerald Burnette.  The book provides expert guidance on proper methods for managing environmental data, as well as detailed information about database management systems, proper database design and implementation, and creation of custom environmental data management applications.  CRC Press will be encouraging academic Environmental Science programs around the world to use this text as source material for advanced classes.

Deb and I are were almost empty nesters!! Our youngest has gotten her MSW from UPENN and has moved back in for a while to help kill some student debt (at what she owes, I could have gone to Maryville 3 times back in the day!!! We miss everyone and maybe, just maybe, we can get back there soon. I hear the mountains calling!

Tom Frederick Hudson

has been named Executive Director of the South Carolina School Improvement Council (SC-SIC) by the Dean of the University of South Carolina College of Education. Tom served as SC-SIC Associate Director, and more recently as Interim Executive Director, since 2007. SC-SIC provides member training, assistance, and resources for the community-based School Improvement Councils in each of South Carolina’s K-12 public schools. Prior to joining the SC-SIC staff, Tom had a 20-plus-year career in communications, public information, and media/constituent relations in the public, private, and education sectors. He is immediate past president of the SC Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association and is a federal appointee to the Selective Service System Board for Richland County (SC). Tom is a 2010 Diversity Fellow of The Riley Institute at Furman University (SC), and is a 2012 Education Policy Fellow of the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington, DC. He and his wife, Alisha, live in Columbia, SC, with daughter Emily (18). Tom’s sons, Matthew (26) and Palmer (26) live in Athens, GA, and Lancaster, SC, respectively.

Jean Sandra Plant, wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, teacher,mentor, friend and everything else passed away on May 4th 2019, in Sedona, AZ. She went peacefully in her sleep at the end of a wonderful vacation and more importantly a wonderful life.

Gail Hamilton Porter, age 64, of Farragut passed away Thursday, November 1, 2018. Gail was raised in Rockford and was a graduate of Porter High School and Maryville College. She was the former Program Director at Blount Memorial Hospital School of Radiologic Technology and Professor and Department Head at Roane State Community College, Radiologic Technology Department. She was the former pianist of Central Point Baptist Church and a Member of First Baptist Church Concord. Preceded in death by her father, Paul Hamilton. Survivors include her husband, Cleve Porter; mother, Betty Hamilton; step daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Matt McCleary; step son, Brad Porter; grandchildren, Meg and Katie McCleary; brother, Gary Hamilton. Caroline Tyus Reed

Mrs. Caroline Tyus Reed, 54, died Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson. Services were Saturday, October 10, 2015, at 11:00 A. M. at Peaceful Chapel Baptist Church in Brownsville. Interment was in Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Brownsville.

Mr. Riley was born on July 25, 1961 and passed away on Friday. September 1, 2017. Mr. Riley was a resident of Bowling Green, Kentucky at the time of passing.
