Heather S. Crawley
Class of 1993
All Notes Memoriam

Heather Susan Crawley, 79, of Maryville died peacefully at her home surrounded by her children on Thursday, May 27, 2021. Heather was born September 2, 1941, in Romford, Essex, near London, England. Heather graduated in 1965 from Brentwood College of Education, a teacher training college in Essex. She taught in primary schools for several years in Essex and in Yorkshire. In 1978, she emigrated with her former husband Michael Crawley and their young family to Maryville, TN, for Michael’s work. In 1993, Heather graduated from Maryville College with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Humanities. She loved learning, and the first course she took at Maryville College was Appalachian Studies. She wanted to learn all about the area where she had come to live. After graduation, Heather volunteered in the college library. Heather was an avid hiker and photographer. She loved to hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. For more than 20 years, Heather hiked every week with a group of friends. She got to know the trails, the spring wildflowers, and the places in the park intimately. Sadly, on one of the trails in 2016, Heather was hiking with her cherished life companion of 15 years, Hugh Morgan of Knoxville, when he experienced cardiac arrest. During their years together, Heather and Hugh traveled extensively both internationally and in the US. Hugh was also Heather’s patient and helpful companion while she followed her great love and hobby of photography. Many of Heather’s photos have won awards locally, and copies of her beautiful photo cards of the local flora and fauna are regularly requested by many. Heather was predeceased by her parents Ellen May Jefford and William Thomas Gough Jefford of Ingatestone, Essex. Heather was greatly loved by daughters Catherine Emma Crawley (Richard) and granddaughter Hannah of Stowe, VT; Sarah Louise Flynn (Brock) and granddaughters Grace and Brooke, and grandsons Andrew and Elijah of Westcliffe, CO; and son Benjamin (Angela) and step-grandsons Gabriel, Casey, and Bradey, of Maryville, TN; sister Valerie Ann Pressley (John) of Hartley, Kent, England, and brother Keith William Charles Jefford (Iris) of Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire, England; and many nieces and nephews and their families in England. She will be deeply missed by many great friends far and wide. The family wishes to thank UT Hospice and FirstLight for their compassionate care and support during the last months of her life. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in Heather’s memory to the Cancer Support Community of Knoxville or Friends of the Smokies.

Krista D. Loy
Class of 1993
All Notes General Notes

After I left Maryville College, I worked from 1993 to 1996 in a residential facility for abused children. Then I went to TN School of Nursing to finish pursuing my nursing degree receiving my Nursing Diploma in 1998 and began my work as night shift charge nurse on a Transitional Care Ward at Ft Sanders Regional Hospital. In 2005, I transferred into the field of hospice care. I had finally found my calling. I loved taking care of hospice patient’s and their familes. Then 2008 hit and I had a slipped disc that caused foot drop and an emergency surgery to remove it which lead to working in the intake and triage department. I did not stay there long but my hospice job was gone by the time my lower back had fully healed. I ended up working again with Autistic children as the school nurse for about two years before retuning back to hospice in 2010. Back again in my zone of happiness, until Oct 4th 2012 disaster struck and I ended up with a demyelinating disease called Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder Vs Multiple Sclerosis. That was the last day of my nursing career. I had lesions on my brain and all the way down my spinal cord from C3, C4, C5 etc, to T10. (It all started after a respiratory and gastrointestinal virus combination.) I have been on various medications since to tone down the symptoms of what is now looking more like Relapsing Remitting MS. Some of the damage is permanent. So I began to focus on getting my Reiki II and Reiki Mastership as well as my Animal Reiki Certifications. Then began volunteering at Young Williams Animal Shelter. I often goto physical therapy when my symptoms act up. Water therapy seems to benefit me the most. My balance and coordination are off and my congnitive skills, memory and language get a little strange at times, so I just laugh it off. I try to maintain a positive attitude as best I can by lifting others up. Oh and I forgot to mention, I am now and ordained interfaith minister which had helped me with hospice and helps me understand others with the utmost compassion. If you wish to know more just simply ask. I am not afraid to talk about MS and how it affects my daily life.

age, 42, was joyously welcomed into Heaven in Jesus’ loving embrace following a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Molly exhibited grace throughout her earthly life, and leaves behind many loved ones and friends whose lives she touched, who will miss her dearly. Molly was born November 23, 1970, in Arlington Heights, IL, but grew up in Kingsport (Indian Springs). She attended Sullivan Central High School and an academic scholarship took her to Maryville College, where she played soccer. Her teammates included some of her best friends, who all rallied around her during her illness. After graduation from MC, Molly continued her education at the University of Tennessee, earning an MBA and finding the love of her life, Matthew Sers. Upon graduation, Molly began a successful career with PepsiCo/Frito-Lay. Her tenure at PepsiCo/Frito-Lay included assignment in several locations, eventually leading to Frito-Lay headquarters in Plano TX. Typical of Molly, she made many friends of colleagues along the way. While in Texas, Molly and Matthew welcomed two beautiful additions to their family, daughter, Scarlett Olympia, and son, O’Hara (Harry) Hamilton, who are an inspiration and joy. Molly was a member of Stonebriar Community Church, where Pastor Chuck Swindoll and his staff were a divine support to her. We are reminded by Pastor Swindoll that “We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations,” and in this regard, Molly took on her health challenge with an immeasurable amount of grace, demonstrating Jesus’ love to all who witnessed her struggle. Molly is survived by her husband Matthew and children, Scarlett and Harry. In addition to her family, Molly leaves behind others to await a heavenly reunion, including parents, John and Lois Hewa, and maternal grandmother, Elvira Mustock, of Kingsport, TN; siblings and spouses; Bill and Lynn Hewa, Johnson City, TN, Marybeth and John Witherell, Charlottesville VA, and John (Jr.) and Laura Hewa, Austin TX; nieces and nephews, Joseph, Carleigh and Hunter Hewa, Mason Witherell and Lauren, Jonna and Ellie Hewa. A long list of best friends are graciously thanked for all their support during Molly’s life, including the Maryville Scots soccer team, many friends at PepsiCo/Frito-Lay, dedicated friends from all over East Tennessee and relatives and friends around the world. A Memorial Service will be held at Stonebriar Community Church on a date not yet determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: “The Molly Hewa Sers Fund,” Attn: Darla Kaufman, Maryville College, 502 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway, Maryville TN 37804-5709.
